Honest note: a full 275-gallon tank weighs over a ton. Set it on level, load-rated ground before you fill it — you cannot move it once it is full, and an unlevel base stresses the cage welds.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Does it come with the grow bed?

No — the tank is sized to pair 1:1 with our Commercial Aquaponics Grow Bed, which is sold separately so you can match your space.

How many fish can I really keep?

Plan for 50–75 tilapia at harvest weight, or up to 1 lb of fish per 5–7 gallons. Understock at first — a new biofilter cannot handle a full load.

Can I keep it outdoors in winter?

The insulated jacket handles cool nights, but tilapia need water above 60°F. In freezing climates, move the system into a greenhouse or heated space, or switch to a cold-tolerant species.

Is the interior really food-safe?

Yes. Only totes with a documented food-grade history are converted, and the added coating is NSF-listed for potable contact.

Why we grow it this way

The heart of a backyard system

An IBC tote is the workhorse of serious home aquaponics, and this one is converted properly — not just cleaned out. The interior carries a food-safe coating, the front holds a tempered-glass viewing window so you can actually watch your fish and their health, and a four-stone aeration manifold keeps the water alive. The insulated jacket buys you temperature stability that bare totes never have.

The steel cage carries the load and the pallet base lifts it for gravity-fed drainage down to your grow beds. It supports 50–75 tilapia or a hundred-plus ornamentals, which is enough fish to fertilize a real garden.

We chose the parts a first-timer regrets skipping: the window that catches a sick fish early, the insulation that flattens a cold snap, the manifold that survives a pump hiccup. It is the tank we would put in our own yard.

The window changes everything

Being able to see the fish caught a water issue before it became a fish kill. Conversion quality is excellent — this is not a rinsed-out tote.

Backbone of my greenhouse

Paired it with the grow bed and 50 tilapia. Six months in and the insulation held my water temp through a cold snap that would have crashed a bare tank.

Great tank, plan the delivery

It is heavy and bulky — have help and a level spot ready. Once sited and filled it has been rock solid. The viewing window is worth it.

Understocked at first, glad I did

Followed the guide and started with 20 fish while the biofilter matured. Zero losses. Added more once ammonia stayed at zero.

Solid value versus building my own

I have converted totes before and this saved me a weekend of grinding and sealing. The window alone is hard to DIY well.
