FAQ

Questions, answered

Do I need grow lights indoors?

By a bright south-facing window, greens and herbs do fine. In a darker room or for fruiting crops, add a full-spectrum LED — the tower has a threaded cap that accepts our light ring.

What does it cost to run?

The pump draws 15 W on a timer, so a few dollars a year in electricity. Nutrients for a full tower run roughly $6–10 a month once the starter pack is used up.

Can it live outside year-round?

Spring through fall, yes. Below freezing, drain the reservoir with the freeze plug and bring the pump indoors — the tower body tolerates cold, standing water does not.

Really no soil at all?

None. Seedlings start in rockwool or the included wicks, and the roots feed on the recirculating nutrient film. It is cleaner than soil and far less thirsty.

What if a part breaks?

Pumps, timers, tiers, and net pots are all stocked as individual spares. Two-year warranty covers defects; after that, replacements are a few dollars each.

The long read

Why we grow it this way

Why grow vertically

Most of a garden bed is wasted on walkways and root run. A tower throws that logic out: it stacks forty-four plant sites into two square feet of floor, feeds them from a single reservoir, and lets gravity do the work a pump would otherwise fight. On a balcony, in a spare room, or beside a south window, it turns a corner nobody was using into a salad garden.

We built this one around the parts that usually fail first. The pump is oversized so it loafs instead of straining. The reservoir is opaque HDPE, so algae never gets a foothold. The tiers rotate, so the greens on the shaded side get their turn in the light. In our test room it went from seedling to first lettuce harvest in about three weeks, on roughly a weekly top-up of the reservoir.

It is honestly forgiving. Miss a feeding, skip a weekend, run it a little out of balance — the plants coast. When you are ready to push it, dial in the nutrients and the yields climb fast.

Salad every week on the balcony

Third month in and we have not bought lettuce since. Assembly really was 20 minutes and the pump is genuinely quiet — I forget it is running.

Worth the price

I priced out building one myself and could not beat this once you count the pump and food-safe reservoir. Strawberries on the top tiers are ridiculous.

Great, but read the note about tomatoes

They are not kidding about top-heavy fruiting crops. Moved my cherry tomatoes to the bottom tiers and it stabilized. Greens up top are flawless.

My apartment is now a farm

Two square feet, forty plants, no dirt tracked through the house. The growing guide answered every question I had as a total beginner.

Solid, wish it came with lights

Docking a star only because I needed the LED ring for my north-facing room — that is a separate purchase. Once I added it, growth took off.
