Understanding Soil Health: The Foundation of Every Garden
Healthy soil is alive. Learn how to test, build, and maintain the living ecosystem beneath your feet.
# Understanding Soil Health
Soil is not dirt. It is a living ecosystem containing billions of organisms per teaspoon, including bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes, and arthropods. These organisms form a food web that cycles nutrients, builds soil structure, suppresses disease, and stores carbon.
## Testing Your Soil
Before amending, test. A basic soil test reveals pH, organic matter percentage, and major nutrient levels (N-P-K). You can also do simple home tests:
- **Jar test**: Fill a jar with 1/3 soil, 2/3 water, shake, and let settle for 24 hours. Sand settles first, then silt, then clay. Ideal loam is roughly 40% sand, 40% silt, 20% clay.
- **Earthworm count**: Dig a 1 cubic foot hole. Count the earthworms. 10+ means healthy biology.
## Building Soil
1. **Compost** - Add 1-2 inches annually as top dressing
2. **Mulch** - Cover bare soil with 3-4 inches of organic mulch
3. **Cover crops** - Plant clover or rye in off-seasons
4. **Minimize tillage** - Let soil organisms build structure undisturbed
5. **Biochar** - Adds permanent carbon and microbial habitat
